| | First marathon training day, but in pretty good shape. VERY tired. Still feeling sore in the neck from the backpacking trip a week ago. Did not intend to run this far, but had to back track for the dropped dog leash. Going to bed early.

Feel great after the run. This running every day is really going to be a positive change in my training. I am recording my calories today.

Lost a pound. Felt very good on the run - like I could have gone longer and faster. Think that the conditioning effect from the monster backpacking trip is kicking in. Really getting off to a great training start.

Lost another pound and a half. I think that it's mostly water weight (for a very obvious reason). Did not sleep well last night. Body is going through some big changes, and there is more to come. Ran 8.5 miles. Walked on the hills and quite a bit of the last two miles. Sutter loves the canals. What a great dog. So far, so good.

The short, recovery runs - like today - feel great. Nice, easy pace. The heart rate is low. This is a big difference from last year and why I know that running every day is going to make a difference. A paradigm shift. Two days, three days of total rest doesn't work in the running world. Remember that what I know about conditioning is thirty-two years old. Times have changed. Still having trouble getting to sleep. I have put my body into a bit of a shock. That's okay. Just be patient and don't overdo it. P.S. Sutter is the best dog on the planet. I love him and he loves to run. Just like Saint Peter did.

A little dissappointing to GAIN a half of pound, after all that work. Maybe I should order a large pan-crust salami pizza and call it good. This morning's run was a short one through the picturesque historical goldrush town that I am fortunate enough to live in. If I am going to run EVERY day, as promised to myself, then these little 20 minute runs before work will become a weekly occurance. I ran further this week than any other week last year. A good start to marathon training. Thank you very much.

I run in "them thar hills". Thought that I ran more than 13 miles, but measured the course in the car. It was only eleven and took 2 hours and forty-five minutes. I am not at all trying to run very fast. When I fell like stopping and stretching, I do it. I walk up steep hills - and at other times as well. Isn't this what aerobic conditioning is supposed to be like? My heart rate is about 120.

Course - over Spring Street bridge, to first set of mailboxes, up American Hill, and return. Time: 56.37 (5 miles) Slept well last night, probably because my foot is getting better. Went to doctor. Young guy. Agreed that I should loose some weight. Even said that I looked over weight. I will be competitive in my age group when I get to my new weight. I am patient, but persistent.

Not sure what the weight gain means. Probably nothing. I am staying within my daily calorie goals. Had a little rock in my shoe at the beginning of Champion Mine Rd. It flipped out of my hand and rolled about 20 feet down a steep embankment when I took it off my foot. Pretty tough getting to it, and getting back up to the road. Sutter just watched and waited. The fair is tonight. Will eat before going. I don't want to load up on greasy corn dogs and other fatty foods. My stomach can't take it. And I don't want the calories. 8 miles... I am tired.

Dry run. Today I begin my 34th year of teaching. Got up at 5:15 and will be ready to head down the hill at 6:30. Hope that I can stay with my new eating habits, and have the energy to run in the afternoon. I think so. The weight is coming down! Did not have the time to write down every calorie today. Did well. Had two 100 calorie ice creams and two Odwalla bars.

| | End Hunger 10K - for the most part, the same training course that I run regularly, except for the big hill up Spring Street. My time was 1:01.48. A P.R.! I would have broken an hour on a flat course. |

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich at 10 p.m. Ran the Pioneer trail out 6 miles, then back. Single track - uphill gradually. Nice to run someplace different. Getting tired of Champion Mine Road Total time: 2:19.

| | Ran on the canal off of Gracie Road. Very nice. Had not been up there in about a year. So tired and sore in the leg muscles. I guess that a 10K race, followed by a 12 mile trail run took its toll. |

Why didn't I loose weight? (Be patient - tomorrow I might) It was over one hundred degrees today, even in Grass Valley. I did NOT feel like running. But Sue wanted to go. We drove up Gracie and ran on the canal. Very cool. Literally. I planned on walking, but ended up running and feeling much better than yesterday. Tomorrow, maybe I will try and get an hour's worth of running in. I just think that it's prudent to take it easy during this heat, and during the first few weeks of teaching. Sutter enjoyed the swim. What a great dog. I love him so much. He's all lab. Amen.

| | It was over one hundred again today. But I ran 6 miles along the Cascade Canal. Good run. I didn't feel great, but - never the less - felt pretty damn good. Especially for it being so hot. I love this run. The one big concern is the rocks sticking out of the ground. Pretty tricky footing. I will just be careful This morning I barely broke into the 213 barrier. Hurray! I will be less than 212.0 by my birthday in less than two weeks. I will be less than 208. by the Sacramento Marathon. Keep it up. By the way, my time was 1:07 something. |

It just feels right to take a day off today. I think that 6 days a week is enough. Cool today. Summer is loosing its grip. VERY irritable for the Land Trust Mavis Staples concert. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich after 9 p.m. Bowl of cereal and a banana at 4 a.m.

Ran the usual Nevada Street, American Hill, 1st mailboxes on Downiville, then back down Champion Mine Road then back up following the canal. I'm calling it 12 miles, even though it is only eleven (very steep, long climb out of Champion) Weighed 211.5 after the workout. Back is hurting. Need to get back to floor exercises. Also could use some new shoes. Irritable.

Back is still stiff, but manageable. One pound less than last Monday. Moving in the right direction. The run felt.... not great. But the back is loosening up. Cannot afford to take time off of training. I will remember to keep up on the core exercises. The weather is pleasant. |
